In 1892 the slave trade was banned and regional power declined, so France took control of the area and renamed it French Dahomey. In 1960, Dahomey gained complete independence from France, setting up a democratic government for the next twelve years. Between 1972 and 1990, a Marxist-Leninist dictatorship known as the People's Republic of Benin emerged, and the country entered a period of repression that eventually led to economic collapse. The Republic of Benin was formed in 1991 and brought with it multi-party elections.
