Structure of Insulin biochemistry

Insulin structure and biosynthesis. I'm Dr. Vijaya Marakala explained in this video, insulin structure and also insulin biosynthesis. Frederick Sanger during 1954 able to identify the amino acid sequence. He was awarded Nobel prize during 1958 for this wonderful discovery. Insulin is synthesized and secreted by the pancreatic beta cells of the Islets of Langerhans. Initially synthesized insulin is called pre-pro insulin which is an inactive and single-chain peptide with 109 amino acids. In the Golgi apparatus, some amino acids are cleaved off during processing to form proinsulin with 86 amino acids that is also a single peptide chain. Just before the release, some more amino acids are cleaved off called C peptide, to form active insulin with 2 chains and a total of 51 amino acids. Insulin is composed of two peptide chains referred to as the A chain and B chain. A and B chains are linked together by two interchain disulfide bonds, and an additional intrachain disulfide is formed within the A chain.
